Participants
This DBT skills group is designed for adults in recovery from substance use disorders. Most individuals who struggle with addiction also experience other mental health challenges. While this group has not been adapted for individuals experiencing psychosis, it is appropriate for those who also have mood, anxiety, personality, and eating disorders. This group is not meant to be primary therapy, so participants must have an individual therapist, either at APP or elsewhere, in addition to attending group sessions.
Description
This DBT skills group will meet once a week for eight weeks. In this group, you will learn skills to cope with difficulties and improve your quality of life in recovery. First, we teach distress tolerance skills to help you get through tough moments without returning to substance use or other unhelpful behaviors. Second, we teach emotion regulation skills to help you reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions in the long-term. Third, we teach interpersonal effectiveness skills to help you get what you want and need in relationships, say no to unwanted requests, and maintain relationships that support your recovery. Throughout the program, you will learn mindfulness skills to increase awareness of the present moment and tap into your wisest self. This is a group that welcomes and supports people of diverse backgrounds and identities.
